Frequently asked questions

Are there different types of headaches?

Tension headaches are the most common types of headaches usually causing mild to moderate pain. These headaches occur around the head. Migraines are often on one side of the head, and may have side effects ranging from nausea to light sensitivity. Cluster headaches cause severe pain around and in one eye. They can occur multiple times per day over an extended period of time.

What is photosensitivity and phono sensitivity?

Photosensitivity means lights bother you during a migraine. Phono sensitivity means loud noises bother you during a migraine. During a migraine, you would prefer to be in a dark, quiet room.

What is a migraine aura?

A migraine aura is something you feel before a headache starts. Examples of aura include seeing black spots, seeing zig-zags, facial numbness and tingling, hearing sounds, and more.

What are some common triggers for migraines?

Lack of sleep, dehydration, skipping meals, menstrual cycle, stress, strong smells, flashing lights, weather changes.

What is a medication overuse headache?

If you take certain prescription migraine medications and over-the-counter medications too often, you can have even more frequent headaches. It is important to discuss with your provider how to safely take your medications.

What is a migraine calendar/log/diary?

A migraine diary is a way to keep track of when you have your migraines and their location, duration, and severity. It is important to write down what you were doing before the migraine started and what made the migraine better. This helps providers guide you towards the right treatment plan!

Do migraines run in the family?

Migraines tend to run in families, but not always.

Is there a test to tell if I have migraines?

No, there is no specific test to diagnose migraines. We diagnose migraines after listening to your history and completing a physical exam.

Can I still take migraine medications if I want to get pregnant?

It is important to talk to your provider if you are on birth control pills or planning to start a family. Some migraine medications are not safe to be used during pregnancy. Certain migraine medications can make birth control less effective.

How are migraines treated?

There are a lot of options for treating migraines including oral medications, injectables, and avoiding triggers. It is best to talk with your healthcare provider about which treatment plan is best for you.
